BlissFest Folkscool
Ukes for Youth Project
and
Ukes For You

Blissfest sponsors a community education project entitled " Ukes for Youth"
. It is available for schools, community groups and camps in the area. The project introduces
a folk-arts string
program to
area youth using the baritone ukulele as the teaching instrument. The program is
geared for children in grades 4th-5th up to adults and will include
instrument care, basic cording techniques and song accompaniment. The baritone
ukulele is a small 4 stringed guitar-like instrument that is easy play and great
to sing-a-long with. Many professional artists started their careers learning to
play the Uke! The baritone ukulele is also a great instrument
because it is tuned like the guitar so when hands get bigger and stronger its an
easy transition to the guitar. The class will compile a songbook that includes
the student’s personal favorites, Michigan history songs and original
compositions. The Ukes for Youth project will also provide an opportunity to
share traditional American roots music history with the students and introduce
them to the creative song writing process. Blissfest will provide instruments
that students may rent or rent to own and instructors who will teach the class 1
hr./week. The Blissfest organization will also create a workshop for other
music teachers in the area to start their own program.
